Red flags to watch for

Warning signs include guaranteed removal based only on an IMEI, pressure to pay before explaining the process, requests for your Apple Account password or verification code, fake-looking success counters, and claims of special access to Apple systems.

Keep your credentials private

Do not share your account password, device passcode, recovery key, or two-factor verification code. If you already shared one, change your password through Apple, review your account’s trusted devices, and contact Apple Support.

Use the route that fits the problem

For a forgotten password, use Apple Account recovery. For a second-hand device, ask the previous owner to remove it or return it. If you have proof of purchase, use Apple’s official support request.

Separate IMEI claims from Apple ownership status

An IMEI can identify cellular equipment and may be used for some carrier checks. It does not grant ownership or remove Activation Lock. Read what an IMEI can and cannot tell you.
